Why God’s Words Matter More Than Ours - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - January 19, 2026

Oh, how people love to speak, write, and create their own words. Additionally, many Hallmark movies, along with classic films, often feature characters who enjoy using words, such as authors and publicists.

There is a fascination with those who deal with words. While working as a Senior Publicist for the world's largest publishing house, I suddenly found myself with more people interested in meeting and knowing me, as friends, family, and total strangers started contacting me, asking me to help them publish their books.

At first, I didn't realize why so many individuals wanted to connect with me, many of whom reached out of the blue, but after a while, I caught on that they hoped I would help them with their words. 

And I helped them, even those I didn't know, by passing their manuscripts and book proposals on to the editors because I could. What the editors did with them is between them and God, but at least I had not let myself get in the way of what God might have purposed for these authors.

As a girl who takes Proverbs 3:27 seriously, I did what I could without any promises to the hopeful authors. "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act."

Lesson Learned

One of the greatest lessons I learned as a publicist is that it makes all the difference in the world, and in eternity, who is the author, when it comes to the value of a book. It's something that believers in Jesus Christ need to take seriously into consideration before reading a book, especially before applying it to their lives.

If an author isn't grounded in the Lord Jesus Christ and writing principles that align with God's word and His truth, we don't want to feed ourselves on it.

1 Peter 2:2 encourages, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." 

Make sure who you're reading agrees with God; if they don't, believe God over their pen. Never put human words above God's word of truth.

God Writes His Own Books

As a former publicist, the number one book I trust and highly recommend is the Bible, which holds God's word. Hands down, it's at the top of my list and will remain there forever.

Nothing compares to it, nothing contains more truth and wisdom. If another book disagrees with it, too bad, there is no flaw within its pages because "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-18).

Human hands do not write the Bible, as 2 Peter 1:20-21 describes, "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as the Holy Spirit carried them along."

Its words are more potent than any other word on earth, as Hebrews 4:12 explains, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

Nothing written by humans even comes close to what its pages hold. As Romans 15:4 explains, "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope."

God's Words Transform Us

God's word affects and transforms our lives like no other words can do, as Jesus proclaims, "Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth" (John 17:17).

As Thessalonians 2:13 describes, "And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe."

Matthew 4:4 explains that it's what we need for our very lives to live on: "Jesus answered, 'It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Let's Pray:

Dear Father, lead us each day to feast on Your word, trusting what You say in it, and letting it transform our lives from the inside out. In Jesus' name, Amen
